EPA Announces Pesticide Application Permitting Process

November 14, 2011 By Steven Perez

Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Assn (IFCA) reports:

U.S. EPA and Illinois EPA issued their General NPDES Permit for pesticide point source discharges on October 31, 2011 at which time the permit has become effective.

A NPDES permit is required by operators who discharge biological or chemical pesticides, that leave a residue, to waters of the state or waters edge.

An operator is defined as an entity with control over finances or the decision to perform pesticide applications. The NPDES permit also defines an operator as the applicator performing the application of pesticides with day-to-day operational control of the activities.

Types of activities that will require a NPDES permit include the following activities where pesticides which leave a residue are applied to waters of the State or at the water’s edge.

1. Mosquito and other Insect Pest Control

2. Weed and Algae control

3. Aquatic Nuisance Animal Control

4. Forested Areas Pest Control

5. Other Pesticide Uses

In order to comply with the NPDES requirements, a Notice of Intent (NOI) application must be submitted to IEPA at least 14 days prior to discharge. [Read more…]

Pilot Projects to Improve Foodborne Illness Traceability

September 9, 2011 By Steven Perez

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced two new pilot projects that will enhance the traceability of products responsible for foodborne illness outbreaks.

The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a nonprofit scientific society consisting of professionals engaged in food science, food technology and related professions, will carry out the pilots at the direction of FDA, under an existing FDA contract.

The Food Safety Modernization Act requires the FDA to establish at least two pilot projects: One involving produce and one involving processed foods. Signed into law in January, the act also directs the FDA to establish record-keeping requirements for high-risk foods to help in tracing products. [Read more…]

FDA Revision of USP 561

June 1, 2011 By Steven Perez

New Compounds and Procedures for Pesticide Impurities in Dietary Supplements and Pharmaceuticals

Changes to pesticide residue test procedures for the analysis of dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals have been incorporated in the new monograph <561> (Articles of Botanical Origin) of USP 34, effective May 1, 2011. The new monograph includes approximately 108 pesticides, involving twice as many as the previous one. These changes have also resulted in the harmonization with the European Pharmacopoeia 7.0 regulations. The revisions are designed to promote the safety and well-being of the public. Many in the dietary supplement and pharmaceutical industries may have concerns about the more stringent requirements and the extra costs associated with the additional testing. Nonetheless, the revisions should have a beneficial impact on the industries, resulting in safer, higher quality products. [Read more…]

ISO/IEC 17025 ACCREDITED

ISO/IEC 17025 is a company level accreditation based on a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) titled “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”. ISO/IEC 17025 is a general umbrella term used to refer to the specific standard; the current version of this standard is ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The standard contains two main sections: management requirements (primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory) and technical requirements (primarily related to the competence of staff and calibration of equipment). The standard also gives requirements related to quality management such as document control and corrective action. This standard is the basis for accreditation from an accrediting body.

ADPEN has also been inspected by the US-EPA and US-FDA multiple times with no observations.
