EPA Announces Pesticide Application Permitting Process

November 14, 2011 By Steven Perez

Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Assn (IFCA) reports:

U.S. EPA and Illinois EPA issued their General NPDES Permit for pesticide point source discharges on October 31, 2011 at which time the permit has become effective.

A NPDES permit is required by operators who discharge biological or chemical pesticides, that leave a residue, to waters of the state or waters edge.

An operator is defined as an entity with control over finances or the decision to perform pesticide applications. The NPDES permit also defines an operator as the applicator performing the application of pesticides with day-to-day operational control of the activities.

Types of activities that will require a NPDES permit include the following activities where pesticides which leave a residue are applied to waters of the State or at the water’s edge.

1. Mosquito and other Insect Pest Control

2. Weed and Algae control

3. Aquatic Nuisance Animal Control

4. Forested Areas Pest Control

5. Other Pesticide Uses

In order to comply with the NPDES requirements, a Notice of Intent (NOI) application must be submitted to IEPA at least 14 days prior to discharge. [Read more…]

Office of Pesticide Programs Launches Online Searchable Database of Inert Ingredients Approved for Use in Pesticides

October 20, 2011 By Steven Perez

EPA’s Pesticide Program has released a new online searchable database, called Inert Finder. This database allows pesticide formulators and other interested parties to easily identify chemicals approved for use as inert ingredients in pesticide products. It will allow registrants developing new products or new product formulations to readily determine which inert ingredients may be acceptable for use as well as making this same information more readily available to the public. Users can search for inert ingredients by chemical name or Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) Registry Number to determine whether inert ingredients are approved for products that have food or nonfood uses. Search results will also provide any applicable use limitations and will flag inert ingredients for which companies have asserted data compensation rights. [Read more…]

ISO/IEC 17025 ACCREDITED

ISO/IEC 17025 is a company level accreditation based on a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) titled “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”. ISO/IEC 17025 is a general umbrella term used to refer to the specific standard; the current version of this standard is ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The standard contains two main sections: management requirements (primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory) and technical requirements (primarily related to the competence of staff and calibration of equipment). The standard also gives requirements related to quality management such as document control and corrective action. This standard is the basis for accreditation from an accrediting body.

ADPEN has also been inspected by the US-EPA and US-FDA multiple times with no observations.
