Olive Oil, Milk, Honey Among Food Ingredients Most Vulnerable to Fraud, Says USP Database

Olive Oil, milk, honey, saffron, orange juice, coffee, and apple juice are the top seven food ingredients subject to economically motivated adulteration, according to a food-fraud database created by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP; Rockville, MD).

USP says the database is the first known public database of its kind to compile reports on food fraud and economically motivated adulteration in food. The database also contains records of analytical detection methods used to detect adulterants.

China Still Struggling To Manage Food Safety

Despite a string of initiatives on food safety promised by Beijing policymakers, China’s latest seafood-safety mess looks worryingly familiar.

Shrimp injected with a translucent glue-like gelatin was initially spotted by a consumer in Tianjin in September 2009, whose blogging on the issue drew little national notice.

Ingredient Adulteration Undermines Food Safety

The food industry is no stranger to risk management. In the battle for consumer dollars, product recalls caused by contamination or adulteration can be catastrophic. Business, legal and moral repercussions resulting from lapses in food safety and quality are top-of-mind issues for all manufacturers. Significant resources are dedicated to minimizing these risks, generally through a variety of industry (and additionally, manufacturer- or retailer-specific) quality assurance (QA) systems. As global food sourcing and international manufacturing sites have skyrocketed, risk management is an increasingly complex proposition, and quality and safety systems are challenged to keep pace.

Melamine Analyses

In September 2008, China found that milk powder, milk, yogurt and infant formula had been adulterated (contaminated) with melamine.  Nearly 53,000 illnesses, over 12,800 hospitalizations and several infant deaths caused by kidney stones and renal failure have been reported.

ISO/IEC 17025 ACCREDITED

ISO/IEC 17025 is a company level accreditation based on a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) titled “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”. ISO/IEC 17025 is a general umbrella term used to refer to the specific standard; the current version of this standard is ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The standard contains two main sections: management requirements (primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory) and technical requirements (primarily related to the competence of staff and calibration of equipment). The standard also gives requirements related to quality management such as document control and corrective action. This standard is the basis for accreditation from an accrediting body.

ADPEN has also been inspected by the US-EPA and US-FDA multiple times with no observations.
