ADPEN Laboratories featured in Tecan Journal

September 20, 2013 By Steven Perez

ADPEN Laboratories was featured in the Tecan Journal 3/2013 under the Mass Spectroscopy section. The article entitled “Meeting the demands of Mass Spectroscopy sample preparation” discusses ADPEN’s use of the Tecan Freedom Evo 100 robotic liquid handler. The Evo is used as part of ADPEN’s high throughput strategy for sample preparation. ADPEN ran many method trials to test the system’s robustness and validate the platform, successfully demonstrating that automation on the Freedom EVO was as good as, or better than, manual procedures.

Brazil Orange Growers to Halt Fungicide Use on U.S. Screening

February 8, 2012 By Steven Perez

Orange-juice producers in Brazil, which supply about one in every six glasses drunk in the U.S., will stop using a fungicide that led shipments from the South American country to be detained, an industry group said.

Carbendazim, a fungus killer banned in U.S. groves, will be removed from a list of chemicals approved by Brazil’s orange- juice industry, the producers-run Fund for Citrus Plant Protection, known as Fundecitrus, said today in an e-mailed statement.

The fungicide, used to fight the black spot fungus in oranges, has been linked to liver tumors in animals. The U.S. started screening orange-juice imports last month after the Coca Cola Co., maker of Minute Maid, reported traces of carbendazim in shipments from Brazil. [Read more…]

Q&A: Carbendazim and Orange Juice

January 26, 2012 By Steven Perez

Oranges on a tree

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports that low levels of the chemical carbendazim have been found in some orange juice products that contain imported orange juice concentrates.

Carbendazim is a fungus-killing chemical used in Brazil and some other countries to preserve agricultural crops. Brazil provides about 11 percent of the orange juice in the United States market, and industry reports indicate that carbendazim is being used there because of a problem with black spot, a type of mold that grows on orange trees.

However, use of carbendazim on oranges and in orange juices is illegal in the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not approved the use of carbendazim as a pesticide on oranges and it is an unlawful pesticide residue under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. EPA Announces Pesticide Application Permitting Process

November 14, 2011 By Steven Perez

Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Assn (IFCA) reports:

U.S. EPA and Illinois EPA issued their General NPDES Permit for pesticide point source discharges on October 31, 2011 at which time the permit has become effective.

A NPDES permit is required by operators who discharge biological or chemical pesticides, that leave a residue, to waters of the state or waters edge.

An operator is defined as an entity with control over finances or the decision to perform pesticide applications. The NPDES permit also defines an operator as the applicator performing the application of pesticides with day-to-day operational control of the activities.

Types of activities that will require a NPDES permit include the following activities where pesticides which leave a residue are applied to waters of the State or at the water’s edge.

1. Mosquito and other Insect Pest Control

2. Weed and Algae control

3. Aquatic Nuisance Animal Control

4. Forested Areas Pest Control

5. Other Pesticide Uses

In order to comply with the NPDES requirements, a Notice of Intent (NOI) application must be submitted to IEPA at least 14 days prior to discharge. [Read more…]

ISO/IEC 17025 ACCREDITED

ISO/IEC 17025 is a company level accreditation based on a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) titled “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”. ISO/IEC 17025 is a general umbrella term used to refer to the specific standard; the current version of this standard is ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The standard contains two main sections: management requirements (primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory) and technical requirements (primarily related to the competence of staff and calibration of equipment). The standard also gives requirements related to quality management such as document control and corrective action. This standard is the basis for accreditation from an accrediting body.

ADPEN has also been inspected by the US-EPA and US-FDA multiple times with no observations.
